The French phrase used by Renault to introduce this car on its first public display at the Geneva Motor Show was, "Concu pour le plasir"; in other words, "conceived for pleasure". If you ever get the chance to see what they meant, then please do so! All the Spiders were only built at Renault's small Specialist Racing Division Dieppe Factory at just 4 per day, each lovingly assembled by hand. Total Factory Production figures stated, including 90% LHD were: RED 25; BLUE 60; YELLOW 249 & SILVER 265. Even though Red is the rarest colour, the car looks its most magnificent, in Blue.
Champion Racing Drivers from around the World, a decade ago, marvelled at the incredible handling and bodystyle of this Road Car! Even an Aussie Champ Evan Simeon remarked, " Being a long time admirer of Ferrari's all time Classic Dino 246, I really do think of the Renault Spider as a 90's Dino". 'Nuff said? No not really, as this is what German magazine Classic Driver wrote recently concerning the new £1 Million quid MBz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss car, by describing it as a, " Renault Sport Spider on a Tour de France Cocktail of Steroids!"
WOW! Can you get better praise than that?
The 1st & last time, I ever saw this Model "in the flesh", was in the late 1990s, I assumed it was some exotic Italian Stallion-----the body was just all curves & lowdown; an amazing shape! Ever since then I have been on the look out for a good RHD Model, but majority that seemed to come up were either LHD, or ex-race or Damage Repaired cars, that I was not interested in. If you are after an Original Spec SPORT SPIDER, with all the books & History, then this is it.
From the information gathered from various sources, but not 100% verified;Total production 600 - 400 LHD (without windscreens) & 200 RHD (with windscreens), 140 RHD re-exported to Germany & converted to LHD.60 RHD for UK Market further reduced due to the number used in Racing & exported to Japan where the car has a massive CULT following & the remaining 30 or so RHD in UK, have been further depleted, due to their popularity for circuit racing. The cars then lose their originality, as a Collector's item, as they are "souped up" & upgraded in the engine & suspension Dept, and many have been damage repaired several times!!!!! Great if you want to be racing, but not an Original Collector's Car as such.
Even with in excess of 500+ LHD originally made; the average selling price for these models in Europe is about £28,000 to £30,000. As a sought after Classic RHD vehicle with maybe 25 or so completely Original cars left in UK; it must be classed as a "Blue Chip" investment & wow! what sort of "Fun", can you have with this car, while you wait for your Investment to "mature"?
Compare the design & appearance with the likes of the ever popular Lotus Elise, Caterham, Westfield & Noble etc., and to most viewers the SPORT SPIDER trounces them in the esthetic design department. The number of these other cars made per Month, easily surpasses ALL the COLLECTABLE RHD SPORT SPIDERS ever made, and left in UK. They are very cheap to repair & Service, so their is no exorbitant drain on your "Investment", as such, if you regularly take it out for countryside jaunts. They will easily return 30mpg, which is excellent for this type of motor vehicle.
